No obstante, la película en 3D Hugo, de Martin Scorsese, acaparó la mayoría de nominaciones con 11 (Dirección artística, Edición, Efectos Visuales, entre otras), delante de las 10 que recibió The Artist.

Mery Streep, por su parte, fue nominada como mejor actriz por encarnar el papel de la llamada Dama de Hierro, Margaret Thatcher.

Así mismo George Clooney fue nominado como mejor actor por su papel en The Descendants.

El presidente de la Academia, Tom Sherak, y la actriz Jennifer Lawrence, candidata al Oscar por Winter's Bone en 2010, fueron los encargados de anunciar los candidatos en el teatro Samuel Goldwyn, de Beverly Hills.

Los Oscar se entregarán el 26 de febrero en el teatro Kodak, de Los Ángeles.
